About this spectacle

Every autumn, the vineyard-blanketed hillsides of La Rioja Alta ignite in waves of gold, amber, and deep crimson as the grapevines enter their seasonal finale. Rows of old-vine Tempranillo and Garnacha stretch across the Ebro valley slopes, their foliage shifting daily through the harvest weeks. The air carries the sharp sweetness of crushed grape must drifting from nearby bodegas. Morning mist sits low in the valleys, burning off to reveal a patchwork of colour against the ochre soils and limestone ridges of the Sierra de Cantabria backdrop. Villages like Haro, Briones, and San Vicente de la Sonsierra sit among the vines, their church towers rising above a sea of autumn colour. The light in October is warm and low-angled, ideal for photography. Harvest activity — mechanical and hand-picking alike — adds human movement and texture to the landscape. This is a quietly spectacular scene that rewards slow exploration along rural roads and hilltop viewpoints.
