Adonisröschen-Blüte Kyffhäuser
Brilliant scarlet Adonis blooms carpet the dry limestone slopes of the Kyffhäuser hills — a fleeting, vivid wildflower spectacle rare in central Germany.
About this spectacle
Each spring, the limestone slopes of the Kyffhäuser hills in Thuringia, Germany burst into vivid scarlet as pheasant's eye (Adonis aestivalis/vernalis) blooms in dense, jewel-bright colonies. Visitors walk among low-growing wildflower carpets where the intense red petals with dark centres contrast sharply against the pale chalky soil and surrounding steppe grassland. The air carries the scent of dry grassland herbs, and skylarks often sing overhead. This is a rare continental steppe flora refuge in central Germany — the blooms can be startlingly concentrated on sun-warmed south-facing slopes. The spectacle is brief, typically lasting only a few weeks in late spring, rewarding those who time their visit well with a display more reminiscent of Mediterranean hillsides than northern Europe.
