Schachblumen-Wiesen Werraaue Mihla
Thousands of rare chequered snake's head fritillaries carpet Thuringia's Werra floodplain meadows each spring in a fleeting, jewel-like display.
About this spectacle
In the floodplain meadows of the Werra River near Mihla in Thuringia, Germany, the snake's head fritillary (Schachblume, Fritillaria meleagris) transforms low-lying grasslands into a remarkable spring spectacle. Thousands of nodding, chequered blossoms in deep violet-purple and white emerge across the damp meadow floor, their distinctive tessellated patterning giving them an almost surreal, jewel-like quality. Visitors wander through a landscape still shaped by traditional wet-meadow management, where birdsong from the Werra valley accompanies the sight of blooms swaying in the April breeze. The flowers are low to the ground, rewarding those who kneel or lie in the grass with macro-photography opportunities of extraordinary delicacy. The scene lasts only a few weeks before the meadow returns to green, making timing everything.
