Mount Rainier Wildflowers
Among North America's finest wildflower spectacles, Mount Rainier's Paradise meadows erupt in vivid paintbrush, lupine, and lilies beneath a glaciated volcano each summer.
About this spectacle
Each summer, the subalpine meadows of Mount Rainier National Park transform into one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in North America. Vast open slopes burst with paintbrush, lupine, bistort, and avalanche lily, their colors set against the backdrop of Rainier's glaciated summit. Trails like Skyline Loop and Paradise offer immersive walks through carpets of blooms at elevations where snow lingers into July. The air carries a faint sweetness, bees and butterflies move between flowers, and marmots whistle from nearby boulders. On clear days the visual drama is extraordinary: electric purples and reds cascading down hillsides toward treeline, with the massive volcano dominating the sky above. Morning light gives the meadows a soft, luminous quality, while afternoon thunderstorms occasionally sweep across the slopes, sending visitors scurrying for shelter beneath ancient firs.
