McKittrick Canyon Autumn
McKittrick Canyon bursts with rare Southwest fall color—maples, ash, and cottonwoods ablaze in gold and crimson against towering limestone cliffs in Texas's highest peaks.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, McKittrick Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains National Park transforms into one of the most vivid fall foliage displays in the American Southwest. The canyon's sheltered microclimate nurtures bigtooth maples, velvet ash, and other deciduous trees that blaze in shades of gold, orange, and crimson against the stark limestone walls and desert scrub. Visitors hike the canyon trail—one of the most celebrated walks in Texas—following a seasonal stream lined with cottonwoods and willows as the colors reach their peak. The contrast between the warm fall palette and the bleached rock faces creates striking photographic opportunities. Cool, crisp mornings intensify the color saturation, and the sounds of rustling leaves and distant canyon wrens add to the sensory experience. Because the canyon is tucked into one of the highest mountain ranges in Texas, the autumn feel is surprisingly alpine, offering a rare visual contrast to the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert.
