Lupin Bloom Mackenzie — Lake Tekapo
Sweeping carpets of purple and pink lupins frame the turquoise shores of Lake Tekapo each spring — one of New Zealand's most iconic and photogenic seasonal spectacles.
About this spectacle
Each spring, the shores of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding Mackenzie Basin erupt in sweeping drifts of purple and pink lupins. The Russell lupin — technically an introduced species — has colonized riverbanks, roadsides, and lakeshores so completely that the landscape appears painted. Visitors walk among shoulder-high flower spikes while the turquoise glacial waters of Lake Tekapo shimmer in the background, framed by the tawny hills and distant snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. The combination of vivid floral color against the mineral-blue lake and big Canterbury skies creates a scene that feels almost surreal. The scent is faintly sweet, bees are abundant, and the light in the Mackenzie Basin — famous for its clarity — bathes the flowers in a warm glow from mid-morning onward. The iconic Church of the Good Shepherd nearby sits amid the bloom, making for one of New Zealand's most photographed landscapes.
