Lärchen-Goldfärbung Berchtesgaden
Larches turn brilliant gold in late October in the Berchtesgaden Alps.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, the larch forests of the Berchtesgaden Alps transform into a breathtaking tapestry of gold. Unlike most conifers, larches are deciduous, and in late October their needles shift from green to a luminous amber-yellow before falling, draping the steep Alpine slopes in warm, glowing color. Against the backdrop of rocky peaks and the first dustings of snow, the contrast is vivid and almost surreal. Visitors walking the mountain trails are enveloped in golden light filtering through the canopy, with the soft crunch of fallen needles underfoot and the crisp, cold Alpine air carrying the scent of pine and earth. The Berchtesgaden National Park area offers multiple vantage points — from valley floors looking up at forested ridges to higher paths winding through the larch stands themselves. The spectacle lasts only a few weeks and is highly weather-dependent, making each clear autumn day feel precious.
