About this spectacle

Each autumn, the aspen groves flanking Independence Pass along Colorado Highway 82 explode into a blaze of gold, amber, and orange. Driving the winding two-lane road at roughly 12,000 feet elevation, visitors are enveloped by towering aspen stands whose leaves quiver and shimmer in the thin mountain air. The rustling sound of aspen leaves is itself a sensory highlight — a dry, papery whisper that fills the canyon. Pullouts along the route offer chances to step out and walk beneath the canopy, looking up through a lattice of white trunks and brilliant foliage against deep blue sky. The pass summit provides sweeping alpine views across the Continental Divide, where the aspens give way to tundra and rocky peaks. Morning light is especially dramatic, catching the gold leaves from low angles. The narrow, serpentine road demands attentive driving, but the rewards are spectacular fall color at high altitude.
