Hokkaido Shibazakura Bloom — Takinoue Park
A rolling hillside erupts each spring in a dense carpet of pink and white shibazakura moss phlox — one of Hokkaido's most vivid floral spectacles.
About this spectacle
Each spring, Takinoue Park in Hokkaido's Monbetsu County transforms into a vast carpet of pink and white moss phlox (shibazakura), rolling across the hillsides in dense, vivid sweeps of colour. The blooms cover expansive slopes, creating a dreamlike mosaic that contrasts with the cool, crisp Hokkaido air and the lingering blue skies of the northern spring. Visitors walk among the low-lying flowers, their faint honey-sweet fragrance drifting on the breeze. The scale of the planting — stretching across open parkland — makes the effect particularly immersive. Early morning light gives the pink tones a luminous quality, and on clear days the horizon beyond the flower fields adds depth to photographs. The park attracts significant numbers of visitors during the peak bloom window, with food stalls and viewing paths making it accessible for a broad range of visitors.
