About this spectacle

Each August, the North York Moors transforms into one of England's most dramatic natural canvases as millions of heather plants burst into simultaneous bloom. Rolling moorland — stretching in every direction to the horizon — turns a deep, luminous purple, tinged pink and occasionally white where bell heather mingles with cross-leaved heath. The air carries the sweet, honey-like scent of the flowers, and the buzzing of bees is near-constant. Wide skies sweep overhead, and on clear days the contrast of purple moor against pale cloud or golden late-afternoon light is extraordinary. Walkers on the Cleveland Way or Lyke Wake Walk find themselves immersed in colour at every step. Light changes dramatically between dawn mist and midday brightness, rewarding photographers who arrive early. The bloom lasts several weeks, slowly fading through September as the moors return to russet and brown.
