Heather Moorland Bloom — Bodmin Moor
Bodmin Moor turns wall-to-wall purple each late summer as heather blankets its granite uplands in one of England's most accessible wild moorland blooms.
About this spectacle
In late summer, Bodmin Moor transforms into a sweeping tapestry of purple and pink as heather bursts into bloom across its exposed upland plateaus. Visitors move through chest-high stands of ling and bell heather, the air heavy with a faint honey-sweet fragrance and the buzzing of bees. The open moorland offers wide, unobstructed views across granite tors and boggy hollows, the purple carpet broken only by pale outcrops of stone and patches of gold gorse. On calm days the colours reflect in the dark pools and streams that thread through the landscape. The wind carries the scent across the plateau, and early morning light bathes the scene in warm amber tones, making the purple especially vivid. Stonechats and meadow pipits call from the heather stems, adding a lively soundtrack to the visual spectacle.
