Haleakala Silversword
A once-in-a-lifetime bloom: Haleakalā's silver rosette plants spend decades growing before erupting in a single dramatic flower spike and dying.
About this spectacle
High on the volcanic slopes of Haleakalā, at elevations above 2,100 meters, the Haleakalā silversword stands as one of the most striking plants on Earth. Each individual grows for decades as a tight, silvery rosette of sword-like leaves that shimmer and reflect light, appearing almost metallic against the barren, rust-red cinder desert. After years of patient growth — sometimes half a century — a single spectacular bloom stalk erupts from the center, rising up to two meters with hundreds of maroon and yellow composite flower heads. The plant then sets seed and dies, making every encounter feel rare and precious. Visitors walk among rosettes at all stages of life on the crater rim trails, with the volcanic moonscape as backdrop, the air thin and clear, and sweeping views of Maui's coast far below. The sight of silverswords catching the morning light against Haleakalā's stark terrain is genuinely otherworldly.
