Giant Puffball Autumn — English Downland
The giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea) fruits in old grassland, woodland edges, and churchyard turf across England from August through October, producing the largest single-fruiting-body fungus in the temperate world: white spheres up to 90 centimetres in diameter and 20 kilograms in weight, appearing overnight on grass that showed nothing the day before. The effect of a large puffball — a perfect white sphere the size of a football or volleyball sitting in a field of short green turf — is genuinely startling and slightly surreal; multiple puffballs in the same field more so. A single large Calvatia gigantea contains up to 7 trillion spores — if each germinated and its descendants similarly fruited, the combined mass would exceed the weight of the Earth. The downland turf of the North and South Downs, the Chilterns, and the Yorkshire Wolds produces the most reliable English puffball habitat.
About this spectacle
From late August through October, the chalky downland turf of Ranmore Common and the wider Surrey North Downs becomes the stage for one of England's most genuinely surreal natural surprises: the sudden appearance of giant puffballs. Calvatia gigantea emerges overnight from grassland that showed nothing the evening before — a perfectly white sphere, smooth as porcelain, resting on short green turf as if placed there deliberately. Single specimens can reach the size of a football or larger; encounter several in one field and the effect borders on the uncanny. Up close the surface has a faint waxy luminescence in morning light, and the weight and solidity of a large specimen is startling. Woodland edges and old churchyard turf hold them too, but open downland provides the clearest, most photogenic setting: white against green, with no context to explain the scale. No sound, no movement — just an object that shouldn't exist, sitting in a field.
