About this spectacle

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in southwest Florida harbors the largest remaining old-growth bald cypress forest in North America. Walking the boardwalk trail, visitors move beneath cathedral-like canopies of ancient cypresses draped in Spanish moss, their massive flared buttresses rising from dark, tannic water. The swamp is alive with the calls of wood storks, barred owls, and anhingas drying their wings on exposed branches. Filtered light plays across the understory, illuminating floating duckweed and the reflections of towering trunks. In winter, the nesting colony of wood storks draws wildlife watchers, while the quiet of the swamp — broken only by birdsong and the drip of water — creates an atmosphere of profound stillness. The ancient trees, some hundreds of years old, give a palpable sense of encountering a landscape unchanged for millennia.
