California Superbloom Carrizo Plain — San Luis Obispo
In years of exceptional winter rainfall, California's Carrizo Plain National Monument becomes the epicentre of the state's most spectacular wildflower blooms — tens of thousands of hectares of goldfields, owl's clover, phacelia, and tidy tips producing carpets of colour that cover entire valley floors and hillsides in colour visible from the air. The bloom year is unpredictable — dependent on rainfall timing and temperature — but when it peaks, as in 2017 and 2019, the visual effect is overwhelming: kilometre-wide bands of pure orange goldfields against the purple Temblor Range, or the entire Soda Lake basin floored in yellow with the Carrizo Plain's saline lake at its centre. Antelope and tule elk graze through the flowers, and the sandhill cranes that winter on Carrizo Plain add birds to a landscape already extraordinary in its floral density.
