About this spectacle

Gungnamji Pond in Buyeo, South Korea, is one of the country's oldest artificial ponds, dating to the Baekje Kingdom era. In midsummer, the pond's surface becomes blanketed in spectacular lotus blooms — broad green pads interspersed with pale pink and white flowers that open in the early morning and release a faint, delicate fragrance. Visitors walk along the water's edge on quiet paths, watching dragonflies hover between the blooms and hearing frogs call from the reeds. The historic pavilion Pohonjeong sits at the pond's edge, reflected in the still water and framed by the flowers. At dawn, mist often clings to the surface, lending the scene a tranquil, painterly atmosphere. The lotus season draws both local and international visitors, but the site retains a calm, unhurried character. Photographers are rewarded with layered compositions of flowers, reflections, and ancient architecture, especially in the soft light of early morning.
