Beech autumn — Hayedo de Otzarreta
One of Spain's most spectacular beech forests erupts in gold and amber each autumn, with ancient twisted trunks and morning mist creating an almost magical scene.
About this spectacle
The Hayedo de Otzarreta is a primeval beech forest in the Gorbeia Natural Park in the Basque Country, northern Spain. In autumn, the canopy transforms into a dense mosaic of gold, amber, and russet, the light filtering through the turning leaves to create an almost cathedral-like atmosphere. Ancient, gnarled beeches — some with dramatically twisted trunks — give the forest an otherworldly character unlike manicured woodland. Underfoot, a carpet of fallen leaves softens every footstep, while mist frequently drifts between the trunks in the cool Basque mornings, amplifying the sense of timeless solitude. The forest is largely undisturbed and dense, meaning visitors can walk deep into the canopy cover and feel genuinely immersed rather than merely adjacent to the spectacle. Birdsong from resident woodland species provides a quiet soundtrack. This is a place for slow walking, deep looking, and the particular pleasure of a northern European autumn compressed into one of Spain's most exceptional woodland settings.
