About this spectacle

In the southern slopes of the Sierra de Ayllón, the Hayedo de Montejo stands as one of the southernmost beech forests in Europe, a geographic curiosity tucked into a cool, shaded valley in the Community of Madrid. Each autumn, the canopy ignites in waves of amber, copper, and gold as the beech trees shed their leaves in a slow, dramatic progression through October and November. Visitors walk beneath cathedral-like arches of gnarled trunks, crunching through a carpet of fallen leaves while shafts of low autumn light pierce the canopy. The air carries the damp, earthy scent of forest floor and decaying leaves. The silence is punctuated only by birdsong and the occasional rustle of small mammals. Because the site is actively managed and access is regulated to protect the fragile ecosystem, groups are guided through designated trails, lending the visit an intimate, unhurried quality rare in heavily touristed natural sites.
