Alpine Rose Bloom — Fellhorn, Oberstdorf, Bayern
Every June and July, the Fellhorn mountain above Oberstdorf — known as the "Blumenberg" (Flower Mountain) — turns magenta-red as entire hillsides erupt in the massed blooms of *Rhododendron ferrugineum*, the rust-leaved alpine rose. Gondola access makes the spectacle reachable without technical hiking: at 1,500–2,000 metres the rhododendron bushes form unbroken crimson carpets against snow-capped summits, and an annual mountain festival with alphorn players celebrates the peak bloom each July.
About this spectacle
Each June and July the southern slopes of Fellhorn mountain above Oberstdorf blush a deep magenta as Rhododendron ferrugineum — the rust-leaved alpine rose — erupts into mass bloom. At elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 metres, the bushes form unbroken crimson carpets that roll across open hillsides while snow-capped peaks rise in the background. The gondola system of the Oberstdorf-Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen lifts visitors directly into the heart of the bloom zone, so no technical hiking is required: you step off the gondola and walk among flower-dense meadows filling the air with the faint, warm scent of summer alpine grasses. In peak bloom the hillside appears almost painted, the red-pink flowers contrasting sharply with grey limestone ridges and lingering snowfields. An annual mountain festival timed to peak bloom brings alphorn players and traditional Allgäu culture to the summit, adding music and ceremony to an already dramatic landscape. Morning light catches the blossoms at a low angle, deepening their colour against the brightening sky.
