Zumaia flysch coast
Vertical striped cliffs on the Basque coast expose 60 million years of Earth's history in stunning, wave-sculpted layers.
About this spectacle
The Zumaia flysch coast in the Basque Country reveals one of the world's most striking geological records exposed along wave-cut cliffs. Visitors stand before towering rock faces where alternating dark and pale sedimentary layers — compressed over tens of millions of years — fan outward in rhythmic bands. The rhythmic striping of the strata, tilted nearly vertical by tectonic forces, creates a visual drama unlike almost anywhere else on Earth. At low tide, the wave-cut platforms extend outward, letting you walk across geological time underfoot. The crash of Atlantic swells against the layered walls, the smell of sea spray, and the vast exposure of Earth's deep history combine into an experience that is simultaneously intimate and humbling. Boat tours along the coast reveal the full scale of the cliffs, including sections that record the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction boundary — a thin clay layer visible in the rock face.
