About this spectacle

Yellowstone Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfall spectacles in North America, where the Yellowstone River plunges over two successive drops — the Upper Falls and the towering Lower Falls — into the vivid yellow-walled Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Standing at the canyon rim, visitors feel the thunder of the water and are often enveloped in cool mist. The Lower Falls, roughly twice the height of Niagara, sends white ribbons of water crashing into turquoise-green pools far below, framed by steep canyon walls streaked in ochres, oranges, and sulfur yellows. Trails and viewpoints such as Artist Point and Lookout Point allow visitors to experience the falls from multiple perspectives. In spring and early summer, snowmelt swells the river to its most ferocious volume. The canyon light shifts dramatically through the day, and rainbows frequently arc across the mist in morning hours. Bald eagles and ospreys are sometimes spotted riding thermals above the gorge.
