Camera traps at known marking sites offer the most reliable chance of a visual record. The surrounding landscape — windswept open fell, frozen tarns, distant peaks — is itself austere and compelling. Every track in the snow is a reason to keep moving. When an encounter does come, the animal's size and complete indifference to the observer make the moment feel utterly uncompromised.
