About this spectacle

From the summit of Hochries in the Bavarian Alps, visitors are treated to the dramatic spectacle of a Wolkenmeer — a 'sea of clouds' — when dense fog fills the valleys below while the peaks rise into brilliant sunshine above. Standing on the ridge, you look out across a rippling white ocean stretching to the horizon, with distant mountaintops appearing as islands. The air is crisp and clear above the inversion layer, the silence remarkable, and the contrast between the sunlit peaks and the soft, luminous cloud blanket below creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere. The phenomenon is most common in autumn and spring when temperature inversions trap low fog in the valleys. Timing is everything: arriving too early means climbing through the fog itself, while arriving at the summit at the right moment rewards visitors with one of the most photogenic landscapes in the Bavarian Alps.
