Wolfsterritorium Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft
One of Germany's most active wolf territories, where established packs roam heath and forest in the Lausitz — a rare chance to search for Europe's returning apex predator.
About this spectacle
The Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft in eastern Saxony is one of Germany's most significant wolf territories, where packs roam a mosaic of heath, pine forest, and historic fish-pond landscapes. Visitors who venture into this quiet, atmospheric region may catch fleeting glimpses of wolves at dawn or dusk — or more commonly encounter the indirect evidence of their presence: tracks in soft sand, howling carried on still winter mornings, and the watchful tension of deer at forest edges. The landscape itself is hauntingly beautiful: vast open heathlands give way to reed-fringed ponds and dark stands of Scots pine. Wolf sightings are inherently unpredictable, but the territory is well established and packs are regularly documented here. Guided wildlife-watching tours operate in the area, offering the best chance of responsible observation while minimising disturbance to the animals.
