Wli waterfalls — Ghana
West Africa's highest waterfall crashes into a jungle pool in Ghana's Volta Region, surrounded by bat colonies and lush rainforest.
About this spectacle
Wli Waterfalls, located in Ghana's Volta Region near the Togo border, is the highest waterfall in West Africa. Visitors trek through lush rainforest along a river path, arriving at a dramatic cascade that thunders into a cool natural pool below. The mist thrown off by the falls carries far into the surrounding trees, creating a perpetually damp and verdant microclimate. Fruit bats roost in large colonies in the rock face behind the falls, wheeling overhead in impressive numbers. The sound of the water is overwhelming up close — a deep, continuous roar that drowns out conversation. The pool at the base invites wading, and the forest trail itself rewards with birdsong and tropical vegetation. A shorter lower falls and a more demanding upper falls offer different experiences within the same reserve.
