In the rolling forested hills of the Rothaargebirge in North Rhine-Westphalia, a herd of European bison — the continent's largest land animal — roams freely through oak and beech woodland. Visitors follow marked trails through the reserve hoping to catch sight of these massive, shaggy creatures at rest in clearings or moving through the trees. The experience blends the thrill of genuine wildlife watching with a sense of conservation triumph: these animals were extinct in the wild less than a century ago. The forest itself is atmospheric, with deep quiet broken by the occasional crashing of underbrush as bison move nearby. Sightings are never guaranteed — these are genuinely wild animals on a large range — but the slow, patient walk through ancient woodland is rewarding in its own right, with red deer and other forest wildlife also present.
