About this spectacle

Wildsee-Hochmoor offers an otherworldly walk through one of Germany's best-preserved raised bogs, centred on a dark, mirror-still glacial cirque lake framed by ancient Scots pines and sphagnum cushions. The air smells of peat and resin, and the ground beneath your feet feels spongy and alive. Twisted, wind-sculpted trees emerge from a carpet of mosses in copper, rust and lime green, while carnivorous sundew plants dot the bog surface. On calm mornings the Wildsee reflects the surrounding firs perfectly. In autumn, mist clings low over the water at dawn, creating a primeval atmosphere that feels entirely removed from the modern world. The bog is home to dragonflies, rare bog-adapted insects, and occasional red deer glimpsed at the treeline. Boardwalks allow visitors to traverse the delicate habitat without damage. The Black Forest National Park setting means the surrounding forest is left to evolve naturally, deepening the sense of wild solitude.
