Whitefish Point Bird Observatory
One of North America's premier migration funnels — thousands of raptors, owls, and waterbirds pour past this Lake Superior point each spring and autumn.
About this spectacle
Whitefish Point juts into Lake Superior at a geographic funnel point, concentrating migrating birds in extraordinary numbers each spring and autumn. Raptors, owls, waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines pour through in waves — hawks riding thermals overhead, owls roosting low in shoreline conifers at dawn, and loons streaming past offshore in the thousands. The observatory operates banding stations where visitors can observe birds up close in the hand. The raw lake wind, the crash of Superior's surf, and the sheer density of movement make this one of the most electric birding sites in eastern North America. Autumn brings reverse migration and impressive owl flights, while spring is dominated by raptors and massive waterbird movements. The surrounding boreal edge habitat adds woodpeckers, thrushes, and warblers. Even casual visitors are typically overwhelmed by the spectacle of migration distilled into a single narrow point of land.
