About this spectacle

Standing before the Colegiata de San Miguel in Alfaro, visitors are immediately struck by the scale of what perches above them: hundreds of white stork nests crown every available surface of the church's towers and roofline, creating a living skyline of feathers and twigs. The air fills with the distinctive percussive clacking of bills as pairs reinforce pair bonds, a sound that carries across the entire town square. Juveniles practice wing-flapping from nest edges while adults glide overhead in lazy thermals, their black-and-white plumage sharp against the Spanish sky. The sheer density of nesting birds is astonishing — this is not a single roosting tree but an entire cathedral colonised top to bottom. From the plaza below, binoculars reveal constant domestic drama: nest disputes, chick feeding, and the restless coming-and-going of foraging adults. The spectacle is fully visible from the public square at ground level, requiring no hiking or special access.
