Whitaker Point Hawksbill Crag
A jutting sandstone crag in Arkansas's Ozark National Forest offering sweeping, hawk's-eye views over a deeply forested valley.
About this spectacle
Whitaker Point, known locally as Hawksbill Crag, is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the Ozark National Forest of Arkansas. Visitors hike through a hardwood-forested trail before arriving at a dramatic sandstone outcropping that juts out over a deep, wooded valley. The crag resembles the beak of a hawk in profile, giving it its evocative name. From the tip of the overhang, panoramic views stretch across rolling ridgelines blanketed in oak and hickory. In autumn, the canopy ignites in warm reds, oranges, and yellows. In winter, a dusting of snow on bare branches creates a stark, serene tableau. Wind rushes up from the valley below, and the silence is broken only by birdsong and rustling leaves. The exposure at the edge feels dramatic — a genuine sense of standing above the landscape — while remaining accessible to most moderately fit visitors.
