Whale Shark Aggregation Yucatan — Mexico

The world's largest concentration of whale sharks occurs off the Yucatan Peninsula's north coast from June through September — up to 420 individual whale sharks aggregating above a deep-water upwelling 10–15 kilometres north of Isla Mujeres to feed on tuna and Spanish mackerel spawn. The density of whale sharks in the aggregation — sometimes more than 100 visible from the boat simultaneously, their spotted grey-blue bodies and characteristic white spots visible through the clear Caribbean water — is genuinely overwhelming in scale. Swimming alongside a 12-metre whale shark as it filter-feeds through a cloud of fish eggs requires no diving experience and is conducted from snorkel in 15–30 metres of Caribbean blue water.

About this spectacle

Off the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, roughly 10–15 kilometres from Isla Mujeres, an extraordinary congregation of whale sharks gathers each summer above a deep-water upwelling to feed on the spawn of tuna and Spanish mackerel. With up to 420 individual sharks recorded in a single aggregation — sometimes more than 100 visible simultaneously from the surface — the sheer scale of this spectacle is unmatched anywhere on Earth. Visitors enter the clear, warm Caribbean water at 15–30 metres depth and snorkel alongside filter-feeding animals reaching 12 metres in length, their spotted grey-blue bodies drifting effortlessly through clouds of fish eggs. No diving certification is required. The water is typically calm and brilliantly clear in the morning hours, allowing intimate eye-level encounters with the largest fish in the ocean. The experience combines adrenaline and tranquillity: hovering next to a gentle giant in open blue water, surrounded by dozens more moving slowly through the feed, is unlike anything else accessible to a snorkeller.
