The Donsol whale shark (Rhincodon typus) aggregation in Sorsogon Province — the Philippines' finest conservation-managed whale shark tourism programme, established in 1998 when the fishing village of Donsol was the site of the largest whale shark harvest in the world, transforming into one of Asia's most celebrated marine wildlife conservation success stories — concentrates 30–50 individual whale sharks from November through May in the productive plankton upwelling near the Ticao Pass. The Donsol interaction (strict no-touching, maximum 6 swimmers per shark, no engine within 50 metres) and the local community's ownership of the programme (the boat men, interaction officers, and guides are all former fishermen or their descendants) create a whale shark encounter with an unusually direct human conservation narrative. The dark plankton-rich water contrasts with the shark's pale spots, creating a different visual encounter quality from the clear Maldives or Ningaloo interactions.

In the warm, plankton-rich waters of Donsol Bay, Sorsogon Province, visitors slip into dark green seas alongside the largest fish on Earth. Between November and May, 30–50 individual whale sharks — butanding, as locals call them — circle the surface in search of the dense plankton blooms pushed in by the Ticao Pass upwelling. The encounter is deliberately unhurried: small bancas idle at a respectful distance while snorkellers drop in ahead of the shark, drifting alongside its slow, sweeping tail. The water's low clarity — murky with the very plankton that draws the sharks — gives these encounters an intimate, almost primordial quality: a pale constellation of white spots emerging from the green gloom just metres away. No diving gear is needed, and the strict six-swimmer limit means sightings feel surprisingly uncrowded. Former fishermen serve as interaction officers, reading the shark's body language and steering swimmers clear. Dawn light, gentle swells, and the rhythmic breathing of a giant gill-slitter a metre away combine into one of Asia's most quietly extraordinary marine wildlife experiences.
