Weststrand Darß
Wild surf coast in Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft NP with bleached driftwood and falling forest.
About this spectacle
Weststrand Darß is one of Germany's most dramatically untamed coastlines, stretching along the western edge of the Darß peninsula within Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. Here, the Baltic Sea gnaws relentlessly at the shore, toppling ancient trees into the surf and leaving their bleached, sculptural forms half-buried in sand. Visitors walk a wild, car-free beach where the forest literally falls into the sea — gnarled roots claw the air, white trunks lie scattered like driftwood monuments, and grey-green waves crash without restraint. The sound is constant: wind through the remaining coastal pines, the hollow rush of surf, the creak of stressed timber. In autumn and winter, storm surges sculpt the beach anew overnight. There are no beach bars or promenades — only the raw, elemental meeting of land and sea, with sky and horizon dominating every view.
