About this spectacle

The Westhoek Dunes form a sweeping coastal dune landscape near De Panne in the far southwest corner of Belgium's North Sea coast, just at the Belgian-French border. Visitors walk through towering parabolic dunes, some rising well above the surrounding flat polders, framed by marram grass bending in the onshore wind. The landscape shifts from open, wind-sculpted sand blowouts to dense thickets of sea buckthorn and dune slack wetlands buzzing with insects and birds. The wide North Sea sky dominates every view, and on clear days the horizon stretches unbroken to the sea. The constant sound of wind and the crunch of sand underfoot give the place a wild, elemental quality rarely found on this densely populated coastline. Early mornings offer the best light on the undulating dune ridges, and the area is quiet enough that you may have entire valleys to yourself.
