About this spectacle

Western Sambo is a coral reef tract within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, lying just southwest of Key West in the warm, clear waters of the Gulf-Atlantic transition zone. Snorkelers and divers drop into a world of branching elkhorn and star coral formations that shelter parrotfish, angelfish, trumpetfish, and the occasional hawksbill sea turtle. The reef rises in distinct ledges, with shallow spur-and-groove formations giving way to deeper coral heads draped in sea fans and sponges. Visibility is typically excellent on calm days, revealing the layered pastels of coral, sponge, and algae. Mooring buoys keep boat traffic from anchoring on the reef. Above the waterline, the sky is open and bright, the water an impossibly vivid turquoise — a sensory contrast that makes the descent below feel like entering another world entirely.
