Western Brook Pond Fjord
A landlocked fjord of towering Precambrian cliffs and cascading waterfalls deep inside Gros Morne National Park — one of Canada's most dramatic freshwater landscapes.
About this spectacle
Western Brook Pond is a landlocked fjord set deep within Gros Morne National Park on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula. Towering cliffs of ancient Precambrian rock rise nearly vertically from the still, freshwater surface, their sheer faces streaked with waterfalls that cascade hundreds of metres into the pond below. The walk across the coastal bog to reach the boat dock is itself a striking experience, with the Long Range Mountains growing steadily on the horizon. Boat tours carry visitors between the canyon walls, where the scale of the landscape becomes almost overwhelming — sound echoes, light shifts dramatically between shadow and sun, and the water reflects the cliff faces with mirror-like clarity. Peregrine falcons and bald eagles are sometimes spotted riding thermals above the rim. The silence broken only by waterfalls and wind gives the place an atmosphere of profound geological depth and isolation.
