About this spectacle

Standing before the Watzmann's dramatic east face as dawn breaks is one of the Bavarian Alps' most arresting experiences. The sheer limestone wall rises thousands of metres above the Berchtesgaden valley, and on clear mornings a sea of fog fills the basin below while the upper cliffs catch the first warm light of sunrise. The air is crisp and laced with pine resin, and the silence is broken only by the occasional call of alpine birds or the distant echo of cowbells drifting up from below the cloud. The interplay of light, rock, and mist shifts rapidly in the early hours, rewarding those who arrive before first light. Whether viewed from a vantage point on the surrounding ridgeline or from the valley floor looking up, the east face presents a commanding vertical spectacle that dominates the skyline of this corner of the Berchtesgaden National Park.
