About this spectacle

Wapta Falls is the widest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies portion of the Trans-Canada corridor, located within Yoho National Park in British Columbia. Visitors follow a forested trail through old-growth spruce and fir before arriving at a broad viewpoint where the Kicking Horse River plunges over a wide basalt ledge in a sweeping curtain of white water. The thunderous roar carries through the valley long before the falls come into view, and fine mist drifts across the riverbank on calm days, catching light into fleeting rainbows. Spring and early summer bring the most dramatic flow as snowmelt swells the river, while autumn colours frame the cascade in amber and gold. The setting is relatively raw and natural, with minimal infrastructure, giving the experience an unmediated wilderness feel rare for a roadside-accessible Canadian Rockies destination.
