Wandering Albatross Courtship — Enderby Island NZ

Enderby Island in the Auckland Islands subantarctic group is New Zealand's finest accessible wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) courtship site — 25 breeding pairs on the island's grassland slopes, their courtship and nest attendance fully visible from the permitted landing area between October and February. The wandering albatross's 3.5-metre wingspan (the longest of any living bird) and its elaborate courtship display — sky-pointing, wing-spreading, bill-clapping, and the 'ecstatic' display where both birds spread their wings simultaneously and face each other — creates one of the world's finest large seabird behavioural encounters. The Auckland Islands' sub-Antarctic landscape (Hooker sea lions on the beach below the albatross colony, rare NZ dotterel and Auckland Island teal in the tussock) and the 3-day voyage from Bluff through the Southern Ocean provides a travel narrative entirely commensurate with the wildlife encountered at the destination.

About this spectacle

Standing on Enderby Island's windswept grassland slopes, visitors witness one of the most theatrical courtship rituals in the bird world. Wandering albatrosses — their 3.5-metre wingspan dwarfing everything nearby — perform sky-pointing, wing-spreading, bill-clapping, and the breathtaking 'ecstatic' display where paired birds face each other with wings fully open. Around 25 breeding pairs attend the colony between October and February, close enough to observe from the permitted landing area without disturbing them. Below the colony, Hooker sea lions haul out on the beach, while Auckland Island teal and rare NZ dotterel move through the tussock. The journey itself — a 3-day Southern Ocean voyage from Bluff — sets the stage: grey swells, albatrosses riding the wind in every direction, the gradual revelation of a subantarctic landscape utterly remote from human settlement. The silence, the salt wind, and the sheer physical scale of these birds in display create an encounter that is difficult to match anywhere on Earth.
