Wakulla Springs
One of Florida's great freshwater springs — a crystal-clear pool teeming with alligators, manatees, and wading birds inside a classic Old Florida state park.
About this spectacle
Wakulla Springs is one of the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs, tucked within a Florida state park south of Tallahassee. Visitors glide along glass-bottom boat tours over crystal-clear water where enormous concentrations of freshwater fish, turtles, and American alligators are visible against a vivid turquoise-green backdrop. The spring boil pulses visibly from depths, and manatees occasionally drift through in cooler months. Surrounding cypress and hardwood forest frames the spring run, alive with wading birds — great blue herons, anhingas, and wood storks — perching at arm's reach from tour boats. The overall atmosphere is intimate and unhurried: birdsong overhead, the gurgle of cold spring water, and the constant sense that the wildlife is largely indifferent to human presence. Snorkeling and swimming in the cold, clear water is permitted at the main swimming area, offering a direct sensory encounter with the spring environment.
