Vikos–Aoös National Park Unesco Global Geopark — Greece
One of the world's deepest gorges cuts through the limestone Pindus Mountains of Epirus, offering staggering rim views and ancient stone-village scenery.
About this spectacle
Vikos–Aoös National Park, part of a UNESCO Global Geopark in the Pindus Mountains of Epirus, northwestern Greece, is home to one of the world's deepest gorges: the Vikos Gorge. Visitors standing at the canyon rim peer down sheer limestone walls that plunge hundreds of metres to the Voidomatis River threading the valley floor below. The landscape shifts from bare rock faces to dense beech and oak forest, with alpine meadows at higher elevations. Stone-arched bridges and traditional Zagori villages perch at the gorge's edge, framing dramatic vistas. Wildflowers colour the hillsides in spring, while autumn brings amber and russet hues to the forest canopy. Hiking trails of varying lengths trace the gorge floor and rim. The air carries the sound of rushing water and birdsong, and the clarity of the mountain light makes distant ridgelines appear close enough to touch. Wildlife including brown bears, wolves, and chamois inhabits the park.
