Ulmener Maar

About this spectacle

The Ulmener Maar is one of the youngest volcanic craters in Central Europe, a near-perfectly circular lake nestled in the rolling hills of the Eifel region of western Germany. Visitors stand at the rim and look down into a calm, dark-green lake that fills the explosion crater left by a violent phreatomagmatic eruption. The surrounding slopes are draped in mixed forest, and the silence is striking — the crater acts as a natural acoustic bowl, muffling wind and amplifying birdsong. Walking the rim trail rewards with changing perspectives across the water and out toward the broader Eifel plateau. In autumn the foliage blazes against the steel-grey water; in spring the crater walls turn vivid green. The geology is raw and legible: steep inner walls, a near-perfect circle, and a stillness that communicates the explosive past in a way that no sign can fully convey.
