Twillingate Iceberg Alley
Twillingate is one of Newfoundland's prime spots to watch colossal Greenland icebergs drift past, glowing blue-white against the North Atlantic in spring.
About this spectacle
Each spring, enormous icebergs calved from Greenland's glaciers drift south through 'Iceberg Alley' off Newfoundland's northeast coast, and Twillingate is one of the best vantage points to witness this ancient spectacle. Standing on the rocky headlands, visitors are confronted with cathedral-like masses of ice — brilliant white and electric blue — rising from the North Atlantic swells. The scale is humbling: bergs can tower several storeys above the water while their bulk extends far below the surface. The sound of creaking ice and the occasional thunderous crack as a berg calves or rolls adds a visceral dimension to the experience. Bergy bits and growlers drift between the larger masses, catching the low northern light at golden hour. Seabirds wheel overhead and humpback whales are occasionally spotted feeding in the cold, nutrient-rich waters nearby. The town of Twillingate itself sits on a picturesque island, offering elevated lookout points and local boat tours for closer views.
