About this spectacle

On 22 July 2028, the shadow of the Moon will sweep across Dunedin, New Zealand, plunging the city into totality during a total solar eclipse. For the brief minutes of totality, the sky darkens to a deep twilight, stars and planets become visible in the middle of the day, and the solar corona blazes in a pearlescent halo around the black disc of the Moon. The temperature drops noticeably, birds may fall silent, and the horizon glows with the colours of simultaneous sunrises and sunsets in every direction. Dunedin's coastal and peninsula geography offers dramatic foreground — harbour views, rolling hills, and Victorian streetscapes — making this a rare alignment of astronomical spectacle and accessible urban setting. Crowds are expected to gather in parks, hilltops, and open spaces across Otago. Proper eclipse glasses are essential for the partial phases; only during totality is it safe to look with the naked eye.
