About this spectacle

On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will pass directly over Mecca, one of the most extraordinary alignments of celestial mechanics and human geography imaginable. Observers positioned in the path of totality will watch the Moon's shadow race across the sky, plunging the city into sudden darkness in the middle of the day. The solar corona — the Sun's gossamer outer atmosphere — blazes into view, stars emerge at midday, and the horizon glows in a 360-degree twilight ring. Temperatures drop noticeably, birds fall silent, and the quality of the light becomes wholly alien. The partial phases, visible for over an hour on each side of totality, reward those with solar filters. Totality itself lasts only a few minutes, yet it is widely described as the most visually and emotionally overwhelming natural phenomenon a person can witness. Observers should plan well in advance given the location's access restrictions.
