About this spectacle

On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will sweep across northern Spain, and Bilbao sits directly in the path of totality. In the minutes before totality, the sky dims to an eerie twilight, temperatures drop noticeably, and birds fall silent. Then the moon's shadow rushes in and the corona — the sun's outer atmosphere — blazes into view as a halo of white light around a black disc. Stars and planets become visible in the darkened sky. The phenomenon lasts only a few minutes at any given point, making every second electrifying. Visitors in Bilbao's urban core and surrounding hills will experience the full effect, with the Guggenheim waterfront or elevated Artxanda viewpoint offering clean sight lines. Post-totality, the partial phases gradually restore daylight. This is a once-in-a-generation event for this precise location.
