Tolmer Falls — Australia
A dramatic two-tiered waterfall crashing through sandstone gorge in Litchfield National Park, at its thunderous best during the Northern Territory wet season.
About this spectacle
Tolmer Falls plunges dramatically into a shaded gorge within Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia. The two-tiered cascade drops through ancient sandstone formations, its mist cooling the air and nourishing a pocket of lush monsoon rainforest clinging to the cliff walls. Visitors hear the thunder of falling water well before they see it, building anticipation along a short walking track through open woodland. The viewing platform frames the falls perfectly, with the dark, layered rock faces contrasting against the white torrent and rich green vegetation below. During the wet season, the volume of water swells dramatically, turning the falls into a roaring spectacle. In the dry season, the flow diminishes but the setting retains its beauty. Ghost bats roost in the caves at the base, making this one of the few sites in the park where wildlife and waterfall combine into a single remarkable experience.
