Toco Toucan Forest — Atlantic Forest Brazil
The toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) — the world's largest toucan at 65 centimetres, the bill alone comprising 19 centimetres of its total length, the bill's orange-yellow surface used as a thermal regulator and social signal rather than a feeding tool — is most reliably encountered in the Atlantic Forest patches of the Iguaçu NP region and the Pantanal's forest edges, where the birds' loud croaking calls and conspicuous bill make them observable from considerable distances. At the Iguaçu Falls' Brazilian side, toco toucans are habituated to the tourist infrastructure and regularly perch on breakfast terrace railings at the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, providing arm's-length encounters with South America's most visually iconic bird. The combination of the Iguaçu Falls' backdrop, the Atlantic Forest's other spectacular birds (hummingbirds, tanagers, and the large-billed trogon), and the toco toucan's tame behaviour creates one of South America's finest accessible birding experiences.

Standing on the breakfast terrace of the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas at dawn, you hear the toco toucan before you see it — a deep, repetitive frog-like croak rolling out of the Atlantic Forest. Then the bird lands on the railing beside you: 65 centimetres of bold black plumage crowned by an absurdly oversized orange-yellow bill that glows in the early light. These toucans are fully habituated to human presence here, allowing eye-level observation at arm's length. Beyond the hotel terrace, the forest trails within Iguaçu National Park produce sightings of hummingbirds hovering at flowers, jewel-bright tanagers feeding in fruiting trees, and the large-billed trogon lurking in shaded mid-canopy. All of this unfolds against the constant low thunder of the falls and drifting mist. Morning light on the orange bill, with waterfall spray catching the sun behind, produces images of extraordinary visual drama. The toco toucan's combination of giant size, vivid colouration, and complete tameness makes this one of the most accessible close-encounter birding experiences anywhere in South America.
