Tiger Shark Feeding Season — Tiger Beach Bahamas
Tiger Beach in Grand Bahama's shallow water — a 15-metre-deep sandy flat 20 kilometres offshore — has become the world's most celebrated tiger shark diving destination, where resident female tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) up to 5 metres have been habituated to scuba divers over years of non-feeding interaction. Tiger sharks here approach and circle at arm's length, their vertical striped patterning and enormous girth visible at close range, and the combination of the clear Bahamas water, the sandy white bottom, and the sharks' slow, deliberate investigation of stationary divers creates a wildlife encounter of unusual mutual curiosity. November through March when water temperatures are cooler concentrates the largest females at the site, and multi-species encounters (Caribbean reef sharks, great hammerheads, and lemon sharks alongside tigers) make Tiger Beach the most species-rich shark diving destination in the Atlantic.
About this spectacle
Tiger Beach is a shallow, sandy flat sitting about 15 metres deep and 20 kilometres offshore of Grand Bahama, where resident female tiger sharks — some reaching 5 metres in length — have grown accustomed to the presence of scuba divers over years of calm, non-feeding interaction. Divers descend onto the bright white sand and hold still while the sharks circle in unhurried, deliberate arcs, close enough to see the vertical banding across their flanks and the slow sweep of their enormous tails. The Bahamas' famously clear water floods the scene with blue-green light, and the sandy bottom acts as a natural reflector, giving photographers exceptional visibility in every direction. Between November and March, cooler water temperatures draw the largest females to the site in greatest numbers. A typical dive may also bring Caribbean reef sharks, lemon sharks, and great hammerheads into the same frame — making this the most multi-species shark encounter available in the Atlantic. The experience is defined by closeness and calm, not speed or chaos.
