Tiger Leaping Gorge Spring Melt — Yunnan China
Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Jinsha River between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain is one of the world's deepest gorges — 3,790 metres from river to peak — and in spring snowmelt from March to May the river runs at violent full capacity, a white-brown torrent visible from the high trail 2,000 metres above churning over boulders the size of houses. The two-day Naxi trail along the high path connects ancient stone villages, tea-house guesthouses, and viewpoints that simultaneously frame Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at 5,596 metres, the gorge depth below, and the high Haba mountain above. The gorge's scale is at the limits of visual comprehension — photographs consistently fail to convey the depth relationship between the snow peaks and the river below. Spring and autumn offer the best combination of flow, visibility, and reasonable hiking temperatures.
About this spectacle
Standing on the high Naxi trail above Tiger Leaping Gorge in spring, visitors confront one of the planet's most overwhelming landscapes. Far below — a full 2,000 metres of vertiginous drop — the Jinsha River tears through the canyon as a churning white-brown torrent swollen with snowmelt, crashing over boulders the size of houses. Above and ahead, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain rises to 5,596 metres, its glaciated peak hanging improbably close against the sky. Behind, Haba Snow Mountain walls off the far side. The gorge measures 3,790 metres from river surface to highest peak — a scale the eye struggles to resolve. Hikers pass through ancient stone villages and stop at tea-house guesthouses carved into the cliff-side trail. The sound of the river is audible as a deep, continuous roar even from the high path. Morning light strikes the peaks first, illuminating snow and rock while the gorge floor remains in shadow, intensifying the sense of depth.
